Hourly Salary: $15.00/hr during training; $19.35/ hr after training

JOB FUNCTION: Employees in this program are required to successfully obtain a P endorsed Commercial Driver’s License through classroom and on-the-job training in order to operate various types of transit equipment for the Memphis Area Transit Authority. Upon successful completion of training, Operators will be assigned to operate buses to transport passengers while providing safe, efficient, and on-time service consistent with all applicable rules, regulations, and procedures and per the responsibilities outlined in this job description.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operates assigned bus in a safe and efficient manner on a designated route.
Performs pre-trip inspections of the assigned bus to ensure it is functioning properly Inspects the passenger compartment of the vehicle to ensure it is free from hazards such as spills, loose handrails or stanchions, defectives seats, etc., and that the video camera system and radio system is fully operational. Inspects the exterior of the vehicle for damage, fluid leaks, and tire damage. Makes a written record of any defects.
Follows all safety and traffic rules while navigating through traffic along assigned routes under various environmental conditions, strictly adhering to time schedules. Is alert and attentive to changes in driving conditions.
Memorizes assigned routes, transfer points and fare structures.
Directs and assists passengers with safe boarding and de-boarding. Provides assistance to passengers with disabilities and the elderly as required, including operating lifts to allow bus access and proper securing of wheelchairs and other mobility devices.
Complies with ADA requirements in the delivery of services.
Follows procedures to collect appropriate fares.
Provides general and routine information related to customer questions in a courteous and professional manner.
Advises passengers of rules and regulations when necessary.
Communicates with Radio Room and/ or Dispatch via the two-way radio system in accordance with FCC rules.
Notifies Radio Room and/ or Dispatch of important or critical situations such as passenger medical emergencies, accidents, incidents, vehicle malfunctions, and route deviations or detours, or other circumstances that might affect service.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintains a professional, clean, and well-groomed appearance in adherence to Company’s dress code.
Keeps DOT card current.
Timely complete accident or incident or other reports.
Inspects bus for lost articles. Secures any articles and turns them in.
Adheres to the labor contract as well as the Employee Code of Conduct and other rules and regulations.
Assumes additional duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

A high school diploma or equivalent (GED).

Other:

Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
Must pass a computerized pre-assessment.
No more than 3 driving accidents in a three-year period.
A trainee must be able to obtain a P endorsement no later than 30 days after completion of the P endorsement training curriculum. This time frame is inclusive of any retests that have to be completed.
Unless enrolled in a Company CDL training program, subject to the terms noted above, a CDL with a P endorsement is required at the time of hire.
Must be able to read, write and speak English and be able to communicate effectively with the public. Should be able to comprehend oral instructions as well written bulletins, schedules, and other necessary documents to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to write legibly to complete required documents such as accident and incident reports or trouble cards.
Should be able to read maps and give directions.
Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.
Must complete all required training as assigned.
Must be willing to comply with MATA’s Drug and Alcohol Policy. As this position is classed as safety-sensitive, it is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Regular and consistent attendance is required.

Environment:

Extensive sitting is required while operating a transit vehicle.
Some standing and walking during a normal workday will also be required as well as bending, stooping, twisting, kneeling, and crouching.
Must be able to withstand exposure to variable weather conditions, including outdoors.
May be required to lift up to 35 pounds and push objects such as doors, windows, emergency hatches, wheelchairs, and ramps.
Requires ability to grip a steering wheel and perform hand-over-hand steering of vehicles.
Able to express or exchange ideas with others accurately and at an easily audible volume through
the use of spoken words. Able to receive detailed information through oral communication or by phone at usual speaking levels and differentiate between sounds in the environment.

Close visual acuity to perform detail-oriented activities as well as acuity to perform activities at or within arm’s reach with skill, control, and accuracy such as preparing and analyzing data, viewing a computer screen, or for significant reading of documents and other materials.
